Emmerich, an old walled town of Rhenish Prussia, on the Rhine, near the borders of Holland, 94 miles by rail E. of Rotterdam. It has manufac- tures of iron, glass, tobacco, &c., besides an active river trade. From a small Roman colony the town grew in importance until, in the 15th century, it had 40,000 inhabitants; from 1592 to 1811 it was the seat of a famous Jesuit seminary. Pop.
