Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 4: Dionysius to Friction, p. 419

Erythronium, a genus of Liliaceæ. E. dens canis, the Dog-tooth Violet, so called because of the resemblance of its little white bulbs to dogs' teeth, is a well-known ornament of English flower- borders in spring. It is a native of southern Europe and Siberia, where it is used as a source of food, and also medicinally.
