Esbjerg, a port of Denmark, 56 miles W. of Fredericia by rail, with a large export trade in cattle, &c., mostly to England. Its harbour, the only one of importance on the west coast of Jutland, was constructed by the state at great expense in 1868-74; and in 1887 an annual subsidy was granted by government for steam communication with Britain.
