Esquimalt, a port at the south end of Vancouver Island, on Juan de Fuca Strait, 4 miles from Victoria (q.v.). It has a magnificent harbour, and as a British naval station is now strongly fortified. In 1894, 300 men were employed on the fortifications. There is a Canadian government dry dock, slip, with naval yard, hospital, &c., and a garrison of British troops. The completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway has greatly increased the importance of the port. Pop. 1000.
