Evagrius

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 4: Dionysius to Friction, p. 468

Evagrius, surnamed SCHOLASTICUS, a church historian, was born at Epiphania in Syria in 536. An advocate by profession, he filled more than one administrative office under the Roman emperors. His Ecclesiastical History, covering the period from 431 to 594, forms a continuation of that of Eusebius. Although marred by the credulity of its age, it is on the whole fairly trustworthy. The best edition is that by Parmentier and Bidez (1898).
