Fano (Lat. Fanum Fortune, so called from the temple of Fortune commemorating the defeat of Hasdrubal on the Metaurus), a town and seaport of Italy, on the Adriatic, 29 miles NW. of Ancona by rail. Its cathedral of St Fortunato and numerous churches contain paintings by Domenichino, Guido, Guercino, &c.; and there is a triumphal arch of white marble, raised in honour of Augustus. The inhabitants (9484) carry on considerable trade in corn, oil, and silk goods; but the harbour is now greatly choked up with sand.
