Faro, the capital of the Portuguese province of Algarve, on the south coast, behind three islands which form a good roadstead. It has considerable exports of fruits, cork, sunach, and fish. Pop. 8671. Faro was burned by the English in 1596, and partly destroyed by the earthquake of 1755.
