Fermo, a town of Italy, is situated on a rocky height 4 miles from the Adriatic, and 36 SSE. of Ancona. It is well built, is surrounded with ancient walls, and has been the seat of an archbishop since 1589. Formerly Fermo possessed a university. Pop. 6692. Its port, Porto San Giorgio (pop. 3114), on the Adriatic, has some trade in corn, silk, and wool. In the immediate vicinity of Fermo are the ruins of the ancient Firmum.
