Fern, SWEET (Comptonia asplenifolia), an ill-named shrub of the sweet gale order (Myricaceæ) (see CANDLEBERRY), a native of the mountain-woods of North America, forming a small bush with linear, pinnatifid, fern-like leaves. Its leaves have a powerful aromatic fragrance when rubbed. It is tonic and astringent, and is used as a domestic remedy for diarrhoea.
