Fez, a red, brimless cap of fine wool, fitting closely to the head, with a tassel of black or blue, worn in Turkey, Persia, Greece, Albania, Egypt, and on the shores of the Levant generally. The name is derived from the town of Fez, where such caps were first made; at present the best are manufactured in Tunis, but fezes of fair quality are prepared in Germany, France, and Switzerland. In Africa they are usually called tarbûsh.
