Figueiras, a town in the north-east corner of Spain, on a marshy plain, 25 miles N. of Gerona by rail, with soap, paper, and leather manu- factories. Overlooking the town is the strong frontier fortress of San Fernando, constructed by Ferdinand VI. In the vicinity of the town are gold and copper mines. On three occasions (1794, 1808, 1823) Figueras has been taken by the French. Pop. 11,750.
