Foot-pound

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 4: Dionysius to Friction, p. 727

Foot-pound is the unit used to express the work done by any form of force. Thus, taking 1 lb. and 1 foot as the units of weight and distance, if 1 lb. be raised through 1 foot, the work done is equivalent to 1 foot-pound; and generally, if W represent the work done, P the weight in pounds, and h the height in feet, then W = Ph.
