Formosa, a territory in the extreme north of Argentine Republic, formed in 1884, and bounded on three sides by the rivers Pilcomayo, Paraguay, and Bermejo. Estimated area, 44,500 sq. miles. The country is generally a vast plain, gently sinking to the south-east, covered with forests, and in large sections liable to frequent inundations, the summer rains lasting from October to May. The capital is Formosa (1000 inhabitants), on the Paraguay, about 100 miles NNE. of Corrientes.
