Fowler, SIR JOHN, civil engineer, born at Sheffield in 1817, assisted in the construction of the London and Brighton and other railway lines, and was afterwards engineer of the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire group of railways, besides many other lines, including the original 'underground' or Metropolitan Railway, London. River improvement and the construction of large docks have also occupied his attention, and he was made K.C.M.G. in 1885 for services in Egypt; on the completion of the Forth Bridge, designed by him and Sir B. Baker, he was made a baronet. He died 20th November 1898. See BRIDGE.
