Francolin

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 4: Dionysius to Friction
A detailed black and white illustration of a Gray Francolin (Francolinus ponticerianus). The bird is shown in profile, facing left, standing on a patch of grass. It has a large, rounded body with mottled plumage, a long tail, and a relatively short neck. Its legs are thick and feathered. The background is simple, suggesting a natural habitat.
Gray Francolin (Francolinus ponticerianus).

Francolin (Francolinus), a genus of birds of the grouse family Tetraonidæ, closely allied to partridges. They are distinctly Ethiopian and Oriental birds, but one handsome species, the Black Francolin (F. vulgaris), used to be found in Spain, Italy, and Sicily, whence it has been hunted out. In Cyprus it still occurs, and has its home in Asia Minor, Palestine, and farther east.
