Frankfort, the capital of Kentucky, is situated amid picturesque scenery on the Kentucky River, here crossed by a bridge, 29 miles NW. of Lexington by rail. It contains a state-house built of Kentucky marble, the state library, penitentiary, and other institutions, and has distilleries, flour-mills, and a cotton-factory. Pop. (1890) 7892.
