Fredegond, first mistress, afterwards wife of Chilperic, king of Neustria, a woman of violent and unscrupulous character, who shunned not to slay all who stood in her way, in order to secure the throne for her own son, Clotaire II. She is, however, chiefly memorable on account of the relentless feud she waged with Brunhilda, wife of Sigbert, king of Austrasia, and sister of Chilperic of Neustria's first wife, Galsvintha; a feud the bitter enmities of which were intensified by the rivalry between the two kingdoms. She died in 597 or 598.
