Fredericksburg, a town of Spottsylvania county, Virginia, on the Rappahannock, 61 miles N. of Richmond by rail, with a military school, flour, paper, and sumach mills, and other manufactures. Washington's mother is buried close by. On the hills to the south Burnside (q.v.) attacked and was repulsed by the Confederates in December 1862. Pop. 5010.
