Free-town, capital of Sierra Leone, a British settlement on the west coast of Africa, is situated on the north side of the peninsula of Sierra Leone, about 5 miles from the Atlantic. The town is enclosed by a range of wooded hills, and, though the temperature is tolerably uniform, the climate is unhealthy, especially for Europeans. Pop. (1891) 30,033, mainly descendants of liberated negroes, with 200 Europeans. The town was originally founded, under the name of Granvilletown, in 1787.
