Gottschall, RUDOLF VON, poet and novelist, born at Breslau 30th September 1823, made his début with poems in 1842. Successful plays were Pitt und Fox and Lambertine von Méricourt. Die Göttin (1853) and Carlo Zeno (1854) were epic poems. Die Deutsche Nationalliteratur des 19ten Jahrhunderts (4 vols. 1855-92) and Poetik (6th ed. 1893), are his most important books on the history of literature. His dramatic works (including Catharine Howard, Amy Robsart, and Arabella Stuart) fill 12 volumes; his novels (including Withered Leaves, translated 1879) are numerous, as also essays published in Unsere Zeit and other magazines edited by him; and he published several records of travel (Italy, Paris, &c.). He was ennobled in 1877.
