Guebres (from Turkish giuour; cf. Arab. kafir, 'unbeliever'), the followers of the ancient Persian religion as reformed and consolidated by Zoroaster. The name Guebres is supposed to have been first bestowed upon this sect by their Arabic conquerors in the 7th century; they are also known as Parsees (q.v.). See also PERSIA, ZOROASTER.
