Guignes, JOSEPH DE, born at Pontoise, 19th October 1721, acquired a great reputation as an orientalist, and, chiefly on account of his thorough knowledge of Chinese, was appointed interpreter of oriental languages in the Bibliothèque du Roi. He died in Paris, 19th March 1800. His great work, L'Histoire Générale des Huns, Turcs, Mogols, et autres Tartares occidentaux (1756-58), is a rare example of industry and research.—His son, CHRETIEN-LOUIS-JOSEPH (1759-1845), was also a very distinguished oriental scholar, and published a Chinese Dictionary (1813).
