Harmalin is a vegetable base, and Harmin another, both of which occur in the husk of the seeds of Peganum harmala, or Syrian rue, a zygomorphic, shrubby plant that grows abundantly in the steppes of southern Russia. The seeds have been used in dyeing silk, to which they impart various shades of red.
