Hilgenfeld, ADOLF, theologian, was born 2d June 1823, at Stappenbeck near Salzwedel, studied at Halle and Berlin, and settled at Jena as professor of Theology (1850), representing the liberal school. Among his works are books on the Clementines, the Gospel of Mark, the Epistle to the Galatians, the Apostolic Fathers (1853), the Gospels (1854), Das Urchristenthum (1855), the Jewish Apocalyptic Writings (1857), Ezra and Daniel (1863), Novum Testamentum extra Canonem receptum (4 parts, 1866; 2d edition, 1876-84), Messias Judæorum (1869), Hermas (1873), an Introduction to the New Testament (1875), and the Ketzergeschichte des Urchristenthums (1884). Since 1858 he has edited the Zeitschrift für wissenschaftliche Theologie.
