Impanation (Lat. in, and panis, 'bread'), a technical word formed on the analogy of 'incarnation,' employed in eucharistic controversies as early as the 12th century to express the union of the body of Christ with the consecrated bread in the Eucharist; but later specially used of Luther's doctrine of Consubstantiation (q.v.).
