Irmin and Irmin Pillars. Irmin was a god of the ancient Germanic tribes, the Hermiones and the Hermunduscs. To him were dedicated the so-called Irmin or Irmen Pillars, one of which originally stood at Marsberg in Westphalia, but was destroyed by Charlemagne in 772. These pillars were mostly made of wood, and probably were crowned with an image of the god. They were held in great veneration by the people. 'Irmin's chariot' was a name given to the constellation of the Great Bear.
