Janesville, a city of Wisconsin, lies mostly between bluffs in the narrow bottom-land of Rock River, which is crossed here by six bridges, 91 miles NW. of Chicago, at the junction of four railways. The river is crossed by dams, and its water-power is utilised in the numerous manufactories. There are a number of flour, cotton, and woollen mills, two foundries, and thirty-four factories of various kinds. Pop. (1890) 11,836.
