Johore, an independent state at the southern extremity of the Malay Peninsula, with an area of 10,000 sq. m. The country is densely covered with timber, and rises into several mountain-peaks, the highest being Mount Ophir (4186 feet). The population numbers about 200,000, mostly Malays and Chinese. The former live by fishing and wood-cutting; the latter are traders and shopkeepers. The chief staples of the country are tea, gambier, and black pepper. All kinds of fruit are plentiful. The climate is tropical but healthy. The capital is Johore, 15 miles NE. of Singapore.
