Jokjakarta, a residency of Java, in the central part of the island, has an area of 1191 sq. m., and a population of about half a million, nearly all Javanese; see JAVA. The capital, Jokjakarta, is a town of more than 50,000 inhabitants, with the sultan's palace and ruins of ancient temples.
