Jonquil (Fr. jonquille, from Lat. juneus, 'a rush'), a name given to certain species of Narcissus (q.v.) with rush-like leaves. The Common Jonquil (N. Jonquilla), a native of the south of Europe, is one of the most common bulbous-rooted plants in our flower-borders. It has from two to six yellow flowers at the summit of its scape (leafless stem). The Sweet-scented Jonquil (N. odorus), also a native of the south of Europe, is another species very generally cultivated. Perfumed waters are made from Jonquil flowers.
