Karelia, an old name for the south-east part of Finland, annexed to Russia by Peter the Great in 1721. The Karelians properly so called are a branch of the Finnic race, about 303,000 in number, who dwell in the eastern parts of Finland and the adjoining provinces of Russia from Archangel to Tver.
