Karshi (anc. Nakhsheb), a town of Bokhara, central Asia, stands in a plain 95 miles SE. of Bokhara city and 80 SW. of Samarcand. It is surrounded by well-cultivated land and numerous gardens. Commercially it is of great importance in the transit trade between Bokhara, Kabul, and India. Its knives and firearms are exported to all parts of central Asia, Persia, Arabia, and Turkey. The inhabitants, estimated at 25,000, are for the most part Usbegs, with a mixture of Tajiks, Indians, Afghans, and Jews.
