Kempten, a town of Bavaria, 54 miles S. by E. of Ulm. The upper town grew up around a monastery (8th century) founded by disciples of St Gall; the abbot became a prince of the empire (1360), and the place a free town of the empire (1289). There are some manufactures. Pop. (1875) 12,682; (1895) 17,353.
