Kilsyth, a town of Stirlingshire, 13 miles NE. of Glasgow, with quarries and coal and iron mines.
Founded in 1665, it was made a burgh of barony in 1826. Here, on 15th August 1645, Montrose with 4900 followers almost annihilated 7000 Covenanters under Baillie (Gardiner's Great Civil War, vol. ii. 1889). A remarkable religious revival took place here in 1839, originating in the preaching of W. C. Burns, afterwards missionary to China. Pop. (1851) 3949; (1881) 5405; (1891) 6073.
