Kits Coity House

Chambers's Encyclopaedia, Volume 6: Humber to Malta, p. 441

Kits Coity House, the best-known dolmen in England, stands on a hillside near the road from Rochester to Maidstone, 1½ mile NW. of

Aylesford. Three upright blocks of sandstone 8 feet high support a 'covering stone' 12 feet long so as to form a chamber. The name is supposed to be from old British words for 'the tomb in the wood' (cf. Welsh coed, 'wood'). See DOLMEN.
