Klausenburg (Hungarian Kolozsvár), one of the chief cities in Transylvania, is situated 95 miles by rail E. by S. from Grosswardein. It consists of the inner town, formerly fortified, and of five suburbs. Here are a university, with four faculties (founded in 1872), and a Unitarian College, both with libraries, an observatory, a music school, and numerous other educational establishments. The town possesses the national museum, with antiquities, scientific collections, and a library of 45,000 vols. Klausenburg was captured by the Hungarians under Bem on Christmas Day 1848. Machines, oil, and spirits are manufactured. Pop. (1880) 29,921; (1890) 32,729.
