Kohl-rabi (Ger. Kohl-rübe, 'Kale-turnip'; so French Chou Rave), a cultivated variety of the Kale or Cabbage (Brassica oleracea), distinguished by the swelling of the stem just above the ground, in a globular form, like that of the turnip, but with the leaf-stalks springing from the swollen part, and adding to the peculiarity of its appearance. This is the part which is used, and its uses are similar to those of the turnip. It is a common field-crop in Sweden.
