Konkan, the name given to the strip of coast districts in Bombay Presidency. The breadth varies from 1 to 50 miles, as the Western Ghāts approach or recede from the sea. Konkan is rather a geographical than an administrative division, and includes, besides North Kanara, the British districts of Ratnagiri, Kolaba, and Thana, Bombay Island, three native states, and Goa, with a total area of 17,000 square miles, and a population of 5,000,000. The annual rainfall is over 100 inches.
