Laeken, a northern suburb of Brussels, with (1891) 25,211 inhabitants. In it is the crypt of the Belgian royal family in the new Gothic church of the Virgin, and a royal palace (built in 1782), which previous to its destruction by fire on 1st January 1890 contained valuable works of art and historical documents. The palace has been rebuilt in the same style as the one destroyed.
