Landgrave, a title of superior distinction borne by certain counts (graf)—e.g. of Thuringia and Hesse—in the former German empire. They were the constitutional successors of the old rulers (counts, gräfe) of the original counties (gaue) of the German empire, and as such claimed the rank of princes (of the first class) of the empire.
