Lanfrey, PIERRE (1828-77), author, born at Chambery, wrote on the church and the philosophers (1855), essays on the Revolution, and a history of the popes; but is best known for his famous (hostile) Histoire de Napoléon I. (1867-75; 8th ed. 1875; trans. 1872-80). He was successively moderate republican deputy, ambassador to Switzerland, and senator.
