Lansdowne, HENRY CHARLES KEITH PETTY FITZMAURICE, fifth MARQUIS OF, was born January 14, 1845. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, he succeeded to the marquisate in 1866, and, attaching himself to the Liberal party, was a Commissioner of Exchequer of Great Britain and of Treasury of Ireland from 1868 to 1872. Between 1872 and 1874 he was Under-secretary for War. In 1880 he again took office under Mr Gladstone as Under-secretary for India, but resigned owing to a difference with his chief over the Compensation for Disturbance (Ireland) Bill. In 1883 he was appointed Governor-general of the Dominion of

Canada, in 1888 Governor-general of India, in 1895 Secretary for War, and in 1900 Foreign Secretary. See a book by G. W. Forrest on his Indian administration (1894).
