Lechler, GOTTHARD VICTOR, theologian, was born at Kloster Reichenbach in Wirtemberg, 18th April 1811, and after various preferments came to Leipzig in 1858 as professor of Theology. There he died 26th December 1888. His first book was a history of English Deism (1841). The Apostolic and Post-apostolic Times (1851; 3d ed. 1885) was translated into English in 1886, and John Wyclif and his English Precursors (1873), by Lorimer, in 1878. He also wrote a history of presbyterian and synodal church organisation (1854), and, with Gerok, a Commentary on Acts (Eng. trans. 1879).
