Lentze, EMANUEL, painter, was born at Gmünd, in Württemberg, in 1816, was brought up by his parents in America (at Philadelphia and at Fredericksburg, Virginia), and afterwards studied and painted in Europe from 1841 to 1859, his home for fourteen years being at Düsseldorf. He settled in New York city in 1859, and died at Washington, 18th July 1868. His works include three scenes from the life of Columbus, several from English history, and a number depicting events in the war of the Revolution, including 'Washington crossing the Delaware.' One of his last works was the 'Westward Ho' mural picture for the staircase of the capitol at Washington.
