Lewiston

Lewiston, a city of Maine, on the Androscoggin River, 35 miles N. of Portland. The river, which is crossed by several bridges, has here a fall of 50 feet, and the water-power is distributed by a dam and canal to numerous mills and factories. The principal manufactures are woollens and cottons, and these are produced in very large quantities. Lewiston contains a Baptist college. Pop. (1880) 19,083; (1890) 21,701.
