Linköping, one of the oldest towns in Sweden, capital of East Gothland and the seat of its bishop, stands 3½ miles S. of Lake Roxen and 142 miles by rail SW. of Stockholm. The Romanesque cathedral, which dates from the 12th century, is one of the finest churches in Sweden. Since 1887 Linköping has had direct communication for vessels with the Baltic, and now exports timber and gilded mouldings. Pop. (1875) 8112; (1890) 12,649.
