Lipetz, a town in the Russian government of Tamboff, on the right bank of the Voronezh, a tributary of the Don, and 300 miles by rail SSE. from Moscow, was founded in 1700 by Peter the Great, but only began to flourish at the commencement of the 19th century, when the admirable qualities of its chalybeate springs became known. It has a large annual influx of visitors during summer. Pop. (1894) 15,860.
