Lippincott, JOSHUA BALLINGER, an American publisher, was born of Quaker parents in Burlington, New Jersey, in 1816, had charge of a book-seller's business in Philadelphia from 1834 to 1836, when he founded the house of J. B. Lippincott & Co., and by 1850 was at the head of the book-trade in Philadelphia. He died January 5, 1886, and the firm was converted into the J. B. Lippincott Company, the authorised American publishers of the present edition of this work. Lippincott's Magazine was established in 1868.
