Lissa, an island of Dalmatia, in the Adriatic Sea, 32 miles SW. of Spalato. It has an area of 40 sq. m., is mountainous, grows good wine and olive-oil, and has 7871 inhabitants—4317 at the capital, Lissa. The island was held by Great Britain from 1810 to 1815. Off it the Italian fleet was defeated by the Austrians under Tegetthoff on 20th July 1866. See TACTICS (NAVAL).
