Little Rock, the capital of Arkansas, is situated on the south bank of the Arkansas River, 280 miles from its mouth, and 345 miles by rail SSW. of St. Louis. It contains the state capitol, prison, and asylums for the blind and deaf-mutes, a United States arsenal, a Roman Catholic cathedral, court-houses, a university, a medical school, &c. Pop. (1880) 13,138; (1890) 25,874.
